Vietnam breaks ground on PVF Stadium with a 60,000-seat National Sports Landmark

Major Infrastructure Project to Host International-Caliber Events

On the morning of October 19, the Ministry of Public Security (MoPS) officially broke ground on the construction of the PVF Multi-purpose Stadium at the PVF Youth Football Training Center in Hưng Yên province. With a projected capacity of 60,000 seats, this facility is set to surpass the current National My Đình Stadium (40,000 seats) to become the largest stadium in Vietnam.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Party General Secretary Tô Lâm. The project is owned by the Ministry of Public Security, with Vinhomes Joint Stock Company acting as the main construction contractor.

Key Facts: Defining the PVF Stadium Project

The PVF Stadium is designed to elevate Vietnam's sporting infrastructure, enabling the country to host major international events.

  • Project Name: PVF Multi-purpose Stadium
  • Location: PVF Youth Football Training Center, Hưng Yên Province
  • Owner/Investor: Ministry of Public Security (MoPS)
  • General Contractor: Vinhomes Joint Stock Company
  • Capacity: 60,000 seats (Largest in Vietnam)
  • Stadium Footprint: 55,000 m2
  • Complex Size: Part of a larger Sports–Service complex spanning 920,000 m2
  • Strategic Goal: To meet above-international standards for hosting major events (e.g., Olympics, ASIAD, World Cup)

Minister of Public Security Lương Tam Quang emphasized the stadium's role as a national asset, stating it will serve as a "center for connecting sports, culture, and tourism" for the country and the region. The location is strategically positioned at a key trade gateway, ideal for connectivity and future development.

Three Cutting-Edge Technologies Debuting in a Vietnamese Stadium

The design of the PVF Stadium draws inspiration from iconic global venues, including the AT&T Stadium (USA) and the Singapore National Stadium. The final structure will incorporate three major technological innovations never before seen in a Vietnamese stadium:

  1. Fully Automated Retractable Dome Roof:

    • Technology: Modeled after the AT&T Stadium's world-renowned retractable roof system.

    • Key Feature: The entire roof can be opened or closed automatically within a timeframe of 12 to 20 minutes, ensuring events are protected from all weather conditions.

  2. Hybrid Modular Pitch Technology:

    • Technology: Similar to the pitch used at Wembley Stadium (UK) and the Singapore National Stadium.

    • Key Feature: The playing surface blends natural and artificial grass (hybrid) to enhance durability, ensure rapid drainage, withstand heavy loads, and simplify maintenance.

  3. Premium Seating and VIP Zones:

    • Feature: Designed for high-end clients, these areas include luxurious panoramic-view balconies, high-class catering services, and separate, private access routes, ensuring exclusivity and privacy.

The venue will feature four complete grandstands and specialized zones for technical operations, security, broadcast control, media, player facilities, and extensive car parking covering approximately 180,000 m2.

Historical Context and International Comparison

The PVF Stadium represents the most significant sports infrastructure investment in Vietnam since the construction of the My Đình National Sports Complex in 2002 for the 2003 SEA Games.

Historical Comparison of Vietnamese Stadium Capacity:

  • PVF Stadium (Planned): 60,000

  • My Đình National Stadium (Current): 40,000

  • Cần Thơ Stadium (Current): 30,000 (Previously over 50,000)

While the projected completion time and exact cost have not been released, the stadium's scale suggests a major financial undertaking, comparable to its international inspirations:

  • Singapore National Stadium: Completed (2014) at a cost of S$1.87 billion (approximately 38,000 billion VND).

  • AT&T Stadium (USA): Completed (2009) at an estimated cost of $1.91 billion USD (equivalent to approximately 50,000 billion VND at 2024 exchange rates).
