Vietnam's "Pearl Island," Phu Quoc, is undergoing an unprecedented infrastructure overhaul with 21 major projects totaling VND 137.13 trillion (approximately $5.25 billion USD) underway, all in preparation for hosting the APEC Economic Leaders' Week in 2027. This massive investment focuses on expanding Phu Quoc International Airport, constructing a state-of-the-art APEC Convention Centre, developing modern urban areas, and enhancing the island's overall connectivity, environmental sustainability, and smart city capabilities. The ambitious agenda aims not only to ensure a successful APEC summit but also to cement Phu Quoc's status as a world-class economic, tourism, and MICE hub for decades to come.
The Pearl Island's Ambitious Leap onto the Global Stage
Phu Quoc, Vietnam's stunning "Pearl Island" in Kien Giang province, is buzzing with construction activity. With the prestigious APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Economic Leaders' Week set to descend upon its shores in 2027, the island is undergoing an unprecedented transformation, fueled by a colossal investment of VND 137.13 trillion (approximately $5.25 billion USD) across 21 designated projects. This extensive development reflects Vietnam's commitment to showcasing Phu Quoc as a premier international destination and a symbol of its growing global stature.
The Prime Minister and various government agencies have issued directives emphasizing the timely completion of these projects, ensuring they align with Phu Quoc's long-term development strategy for sustainable growth beyond the APEC event.
Key Projects Driving Phu Quoc's Development
The strategic investments are concentrated on critical infrastructure, urban development, and cutting-edge facilities to meet the demands of hosting thousands of delegates from leading global economies:
Phu Quoc International Airport Expansion:
Massive Upgrade: The airport is undergoing a significant expansion, with a planned investment of nearly VND 22 trillion (approximately $841.3 million USD).
Increased Capacity: By 2027, the airport's capacity is set to increase by 4.5 times its current capacity of 4 million, accommodating up to 18 million passengers annually. By 2050, this is projected to reach 50 million passengers.
Dual Runways & Modern Terminals: The expansion includes extending the existing 3,000m runway to 3,500m and constructing a second 3,300m runway. A new international Terminal 2 (T2) will be built, capable of handling large wide-body aircraft (like Boeing 747s, 787s, and Airbus A350s) and long-haul international flights from Europe and the U.S.
Advanced Technology: The new terminal will feature cutting-edge technologies such as remote check-in, automated baggage sorting, and biometric identification for rapid processing, aiming to reduce entry/exit times to 15-30 seconds per person. A dedicated VVIP terminal designed by Italian architect Marco Casamonti will also be built for high-ranking delegations.
APEC Convention Centre and Urban Zones:
Multi-functional Complex: A central pillar of the preparations is the APEC Multi-functional Complex, with a total investment of VND 64 trillion (approximately $2.4 billion USD). This complex will house a 10,000 sqm Convention and Exhibition Centre, a multi-purpose auditorium, an international press center, and an APEC square.
Integrated Development: This project is part of a larger mixed-use urban area known as Dat Do Urban Zone. Additionally, the Nui Ong Quan Ecotourism and Urban Zone, valued at VND 5.55 trillion (approximately $212.2 million USD), is also underway.
Luxury Hospitality: The island is enhancing its world-class tourism ecosystem, which already boasts renowned hotel brands like Marriott, Accor, Hilton, and IHG. New luxury resorts, such as the Rixos Phu Quoc, and the Aspira Tower (featuring The Luxury Collection Hon Thom Hotel) are being developed, with the latter poised to be a new landmark on Hon Thom Island by 2027.
Enhanced Connectivity and Smart City Initiatives:
Road Network: Major roads connecting the airport to the city center and other key areas are being upgraded and expanded to ensure seamless transport during and after APEC.
International Seaport: Plans are in place to complete an international cruise port by the end of 2026, capable of handling 3,000-4,000 passengers per trip, further boosting maritime tourism.
Smart Urban Center: Phu Quoc is implementing a major tech infrastructure project (VND 500 billion / $19.1 million USD) to establish a provincial data center, monitoring hub, surveillance camera network, and environmental monitoring equipment. This will serve as a "Smart Operations Centre," integrating management across urban planning, tourism, public security, and environment, aiming for sustainable and green growth.
Green Initiatives: The island is pushing for a net-zero future, with plans for clean transportation, renewable energy, and improved waste management, aiming to become a model for sustainable tourism in Vietnam.
Long-Term Vision Beyond APEC 2027
The investments for APEC 2027 are not merely for the summit but are strategic steps to solidify Phu Quoc's position as an international economic, commercial, and marine eco-tourism hub. The government views APEC 2027 as a catalyst to:
Promote Phu Quoc's image and development.
Attract further foreign direct investment.
Enhance its competitiveness in the global tourism and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) markets.
Deepen its integration into the national economy and global supply chains.
With aggressive timelines and strong government backing, Phu Quoc is undergoing a dramatic metamorphosis, preparing to welcome the world in 2027 and beyond as a beacon of Vietnam's development and global ambition.
